Below: Story Behind the Cover

Hello everyone! Today I'm so excited that author Alexandria Warwick shared the story behind the cover of her upcoming work Below.

I spent close to three months searching for an illustrator. I knew two things: I wanted the cover to be a hand-painted watercolor illustration, and I wanted the main image to be a young indigenous woman without a face.

Most of my time was spent searching on DeviantART. Endless hours of scrolling! I finally

stumbled across Faryn Hughes profile. Looking at her art, I knew she was the person I wanted as the cover illustrator. Her work has a large focus on nature. It also has an ethereal quality that I thought paired well with the mythological story aspect.

The only thing I told Faryn was I wanted a girl without a face, and sent her a small sketch for

inspiration. Then she took my idea and created what I think is the most stunning book cover I’ve ever seen (I’m biased, but still!). When I saw the completed illustration, I was blown away. I knew it was going to be amazing based on the initial sketch, but the finished product... wow. I’m so thankful to be working with Faryn, and judging by the reactions of everyone who sees the cover (namely that it’s stunning), I’m very glad I found an artist that could do the story justice.

Genre: Young Adult, Fantasy

From the author of The Demon Race comes a YA dark fantasy series inspired by Inuit mythology.

In the heart of the frigid North, there lives a demon known as the Face Stealer. Eyes, nose, mouth—nothing and no one is safe. Once he returns to his lair, or wherever it is he dwells, no one ever sees those faces again.

When tragedy strikes, Apaay embarks on a perilous journey to find her sister's face—yet becomes trapped in a labyrinth ruled by a sinister girl named Yuki. The girl offers Apaay a deal: find her sister's face hidden within the labyrinth, and she will be set free. But the labyrinth, and those who inhabit it, is not as it seems. Especially Numiak: darkly beautiful, powerful, whose motives are not yet clear.

With time slipping, Apaay is determined to escape the deadly labyrinth with her sister's face in hand. But in Yuki's harsh world, Apaay will need all her strength to survive.

Yuki only plays the games she wins.
